Food crises do not appear overnight. Conflict, drought, market disruption, displacement, high food prices and funding gaps can push families from stress into crisis, emergency and famine conditions.

FAO and WFP warned in June 2026 that acute food insecurity is expected to worsen for millions of people across 13 hunger hotspots between June and November 2026. That kind of early warning is designed to trigger action before conditions become catastrophic.

Public donations to food assistance, nutrition and cash programmes can be especially important when aid agencies are trying to prevent a severe food crisis from becoming a famine.
